At Shaftesbury CE Primary School we are committed to safeguarding. We ensure that every member of staff has successfully completed the necessary clearances to ensure they can safely work with children.
Within school, we have staff who are specifically trained as Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and some that are Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSLs). These members of staff receive regular update training and this information is cascaded to all staff.
Designated Safeguarding Lead:
Kelly Fletcher – Head of School
Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads:
Gayle Edwards – Deputy Head of School
Danielle Haylock – Key Stage 1 Phase Leader
Sophie Cox – Lower Key Stage 2 Phase Leader
Jessica Coleman – Upper Key Stage 2 Phase Leader
Tom Barnett – Class Teacher
Gemma Westlake – Parent Support Adviser
Part of our legal duty to safeguard our children, may also include us needing to consult specifically with, and take advice from, the Police or Children’s Social Care, should the need arise. We also seek advice from Dorset Safeguarding Children Board.

Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass is joint working between schools and their local police force to support families who have been exposed to or suffered domestic abuse. Schools will be notified when a child has been involved or witnessed an incident – this notification will come before the start of the school day.
We have an identified key adult in school, who is trained to liaise with the police and use the information that has been shared, in confidence, while the school is able to make provision to best support the child. Our staff have an awareness of the possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have experienced a domestic abuse incident.
Our key adult is also our Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Operation Encompass Key Principles
What to do if you’re concerned about a child:
It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children. If you are concerned about the welfare of a child, please share this information with a DSL/DDSL at school or make a call to the Dorset Council Family Support and Advice Line: 01305 228558
By working closely together, as a school community, we offer a safe learning environment for all of our children.
